Desperate Residents Flock to Collectorate Seeking Urgent Flood Compensation Relief
Flood victims gathered outside the Collectorate in Vijayawada on Saturday to submit compensation applications for losses incurred during early September floods. A list of affected individuals from 32 city wards was initially released on September 22-23, followed by a revised list on September 26. Despite these efforts, many residents found their names missing and continued to seek compensation.
More than 1,100 new applications were received on Saturday, primarily from those whose initial requests were rejected at the ward secretariat. Residents cited various reasons for the oversight, including miscommunication during damage assessments. For instance, P. Pravalika explained that inspectors had incorrectly assessed her home’s damage in Payakapuram. Similarly, Kanaka Mahalakshmi, from One Town’s ward 46, lamented the significant losses her household suffered, which went unrecorded unlike her neighbors.
Many applicants faced difficulties in completing the forms, which required detailed personal information in English. Some resorted to paying others to fill out their forms for ₹10—a notable challenge for those already in distress. Officials assured that names not found in the lists could still seek government aid.
