Mangaluru Gears up for Public Auction of Stall Spaces for Dasara Festival
In preparation for the upcoming 10-day Dasara Festival commencing on October 3, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will conduct a public auction on Monday, September 30, to allocate spaces for trade stalls outside the Kudroli Gokarnanatha and Mahatobara Mangaladevi temples. This auction follows a directive from the Karnataka High Court, mandating the proper legal process.
The MCC will auction a total of 140 spaces outside the Kudroli temple. This includes 130 stalls measuring 10 ft. x 5 ft. and 10 larger stalls measuring 10 ft. x 15 ft., with the auction set for 3 p.m. on Monday. Additionally, at 10:30 a.m., an auction for 90 stalls outside the Mangaladevi temple will occur. These stalls include various dimensions, such as 10 ft. x 8 ft., 10 ft. x 10 ft., and other specific sizes.
The decision to auction the stalls was influenced by a writ petition filed by street vendors under the Karnataka Rajya Hindu Jatra Vyaparasthara Sangha, leading to a court order on September 26 from Judge Hemant Chandangoudar.
Previously, stall spaces outside the Kudroli temple were allotted to the highest bidder, who then sublet the spaces, deriving significant income. For instance, last year, a Billava youth organization won the tender for ₹49,000 but earned ₹90 lakh, remitting ₹38 lakh to the temple. To eliminate such practices, this year’s auction will assign stalls individually.
This is the second successive year for the public auction of spaces outside the Mangaladevi temple. Last year, the temple earned ₹10.5 lakh from the auction, a significant increase from ₹3 lakh the previous year.
Mr. Mahesh Das of the Karnataka Rajya Hindu Jatra Vyaparasthara Sangha highlighted the MCC’s substantial annual expenditure of over ₹1 crore on city lighting during the festival. The new auction approach aims to ensure transparency and proper revenue allocation.
