Unyielding Outcry: Massive Namsai Protest Condemns Heinous Atrocities Against Buddhists in Bangladesh
Thousands Rally in Arunachal Pradesh to Condemn Atrocities Against Buddhists in Bangladesh
In a significant display of solidarity and protest, the Arunachal Pradesh Bhikkhu Sangha, along with over 20,000 Buddhist devotees, organized a peaceful rally from Poi Pee Mau ground to the District Secretariat office in Namsai. The protest aimed to denounce ongoing atrocities against the Buddhist community in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Recent violence in areas like Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban has led to the destruction of over 1,000 homes and businesses, with Buddhist temples also vandalized.
Participants of the rally chanted slogans condemning the brutal attacks on the Chakma and other minority communities by extremist groups. Ven. Dhammakitti Mahathero, the president of Arunachal Pradesh Bhikkhu Sangha, expressed grave concern over the escalating violence following the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh. “It is unfortunate that after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, peace-loving Buddhist communities have been brutally targeted, with many murdered and injured, while their properties have been set ablaze,” he remarked.
General Secretary Bhikkhu Ratnadeepa highlighted the non-violent nature of the Buddhist community, stating, “We never harm any living organisms; yet, our people are being attacked without provocation by Bangladeshi hardliners.”
During the protest, a memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Md. Mustafizur Rehman, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, via the District Commissioner of Namsai, urging immediate action to ensure the security and rights of the Buddhist community in Bangladesh.
The large turnout and passionate expressions of concern reflect the deep anguish and solidarity among Buddhist devotees in Arunachal Pradesh towards their brethren in Bangladesh. This peaceful protest underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to halt the continuing violence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
