Shockwave: AAP Backs BJP in Historic Push to Regularize Bus Marshals, Assembly Resolution Passed
AAP and BJP Unite in Delhi Assembly to Reinstate Bus Marshals
In an unprecedented demonstration of unity, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) joined forces in the Delhi Assembly on the first day of a two-day session. The assembly passed a resolution to reinstate and regularize the services of bus marshals, a move initiated by AAP but supported by BJP.
Initially appointed by the AAP government in 2015 to ensure the safety of women commuters, these civil defence volunteers, serving as bus marshals, had been working on a daily wage of ₹844. However, a circular issued by the Lieutenant-Governor in October 2023 rendered 10,000 marshals jobless, declaring the appointment process illegal. Although their status as civil volunteers remained, their salaries and bus marshal duties were halted.
The AAP accused the L-G of political vendetta, while the BJP contended that AAP jeopardized the careers of young volunteers by not adhering to proper procedures. During the Assembly session, Opposition Leader Vijender Gupta proposed the restoration and permanent employment of the marshals. Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj responded affirmatively, and an amendment to Gupta’s motion led to the passage of a resolution to reinstate the marshals and grant them permanent status.
The resolution mandates that all Assembly members and Delhi Government Ministers meet with the Lieutenant-Governor on October 3 to expedite the reinstatement process, citing the necessity of his approval.
Earlier, disruptive protests by BJP MLAs, demanding pending CAG reports, resulted in their expulsion from the Well of the House, causing a brief adjournment of proceedings by Speaker Ram Niwas Goel.
In other assembly news, the Speaker confirmed the resignations and disqualifications of four MLAs, reducing AAP’s strength to 59 and BJP’s to seven in the 70-member Assembly. The Election Commission was notified of the resulting vacant seats.
