Outrage Erupts Over Dengue Crisis: Kochi Corporation Scrutinized; Health Officials Assure Control
Kochi Civic Administration Criticized Amid Rising Dengue Fever Cases
Kochi’s civic administration is facing intense scrutiny as a spike in dengue fever cases has emerged, particularly in the Thammanam-Kaloor area. Over the past two weeks, Kochi Corporation’s health workers concentrated their efforts here following numerous reports. Last month, attention was centered on Mattanchery due to similar outbreaks.
Opposition councillors have lambasted the civic authorities, accusing them of failing to control the dengue spread and under-reporting the situation. Despite officials stating that only 11 cases were recorded in August from the city’s 12 primary health centers, Congress leaders Antony Kureethara and M.G. Aristotle claimed the actual number was 802. They highlighted alarming concentrations of cases in places like Kaloor (137), Vennala (107), and Kuthappadi (99).
Congress councillors criticized the administration for allegedly downplaying the numbers to shirk responsibility. However, an official from the Health wing countered that the situation is under control, noting a decrease in cases and ongoing mosquito control measures such as fogging and larvicides to prevent breeding.
The civic body’s response comes amid its concerted efforts to manage the mosquito population and curb the disease’s spread, asserts the official.
