Drama Unfolds as Devoted Bangladesh Cricket Fan ‘Tiger Robi’ Allegedly Assaulted at Kanpur Stadium, Later Retracts Claims
A Bangladeshi cricket fan known as ‘Tiger Robi’ was rushed to the hospital after an incident at Green Park Stadium during the second India-Bangladesh Test match in Kanpur. The fan, who typically dons a tiger costume symbolizing the Bangladeshi team’s emblem, was allegedly heckled and assaulted while standing in the C Block balcony. Footage shared by PTI depicted Robi being escorted by medical and security personnel, and later seated with officials providing water. Initially, he indicated he was punched in the lower back, but later, he attributed his discomfort to a pre-existing medical condition and denied any assault.
Police confirmed Robi is in India on a medical visa for tuberculosis treatment, a severe respiratory illness. Harish Chander, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), stated that Robi, who had also attended the first Test match in Chennai, has been suffering from the illness which primarily affects his lungs.
Authorities are now scrutinizing Robi’s visa, passport details, and travel history. CCTV footage from the stadium showed him approaching the media center gate before collapsing in apparent pain. Officers on the scene tried to assist but struggled to understand him, as he was pointing to his abdomen and having difficulty communicating.
Earlier, Kanpur Police dismissed allegations of assault, asserting that they would verify Robi’s claims with CCTV evidence. “It seems Robi was suffering from dehydration and collapsed due to his illness. He was taken to the hospital, and his condition is stable,” Chander said.
This incident took place amid heightened tensions, with right-wing groups protesting near the stadium, demanding the Test match’s cancellation. In response, police have intensified security measures to ensure the safety of all spectators and participants.
