Guwahati: Metbah Lyngdoh, president of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has urged cow vigilantes to respect the religious practices of Meghalaya’s indigenous population amid plans for a rally in Shillong. Scheduled for October 2, the rally is part of the Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra movement, pushing for cow protection and a ban on cow slaughter.
Lyngdoh expressed concerns about potential disturbances and called on the organizers to consider the rally’s impact on Meghalaya’s diverse communities. The district administration has yet to confirm whether the necessary permissions for the event have been granted.
The Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra aims to elevate the cow to the status of “Rashtra Mata” (National Mother), igniting debates on religious freedom and cultural sensitivity. Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon previously opposed the nationwide call to ban cow slaughter, arguing that diet choices should not be dictated by any individual or group.
Ymbon, who oversees Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, highlighted India’s secular principles that ensure freedom of dietary preferences. He emphasized that beef is a staple in Meghalaya’s predominantly Christian community, and a cow slaughter ban could have severe economic repercussions for cow breeders reliant on the trade.
