Disheartening: Bengaluru Parks Defy BBMP Order on Extended Timings, Residents Left Disappointed
Parks in Bengaluru Defy BBMP’s All-Day Access Order, Residents Frustrated
Bengaluru: Despite directives from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to keep city parks open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., numerous green spaces are not complying, leaving residents exasperated. In June, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar had announced round-the-clock park access to cater to labourers and gig workers needing rest during work breaks. However, citizens are complaining about the lack of enforcement.
Complaints have arisen against Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) that manage some parks, alleging they restrict access during specified hours, causing inconvenience. Rohini Mohan expressed her frustration on social media, mentioning that Madhavan Park was closed mid-morning, thwarting her elderly mother’s walking plans. Another resident, Raja, shared a similar issue at Yediyur Park, noting that a security guard claimed the new open-all-day proposal had been cancelled.
Kiran Kumar from Banashankari highlighted irregular park hours in his locality, attributing the problem to RWAs and park adopters exerting undue control. He acknowledged the adoption policy’s benefits but pointed out its downside for public access.
A senior BBMP official confirmed efforts are underway to ensure parks adhere to the new timings. Citizens can report non-compliance via the BBMP helpline (22660000 or 22221188) or WhatsApp (9480685700).
