North East India Festival Shines in Istanbul
A delegation of 54 individuals from India’s Northeast recently showcased their region’s rich cultural heritage in Istanbul, Turkey, during the 19th edition of the North East India Festival. Organized by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT), the event aimed to promote the Northeast’s tourism, textiles, and handicrafts globally. The festival was supported by the Consulate General of India in Istanbul and co-sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya.
The audience experienced a dazzling blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design from notable designers like Daniel Syiem, Moryca Marak, Robert Naorem, Bambi Kevichusa, and others. Syiem’s collection, "The Ryndia Chronicles," paid tribute to Meghalaya’s indigenous Ryndia fabric. His commitment to sustainability, reflected in the use of natural white fabric and silkworm cocoons, resonated deeply with the audience.
Moryca Marak from Garo Hills brought a fresh perspective by integrating traditional patterns and modern fashion trends, aiming to make traditional fabrics appealing to younger audiences. Her designs balanced modern silhouettes with traditional materials, offering a contemporary twist on Garo attire.
Model Nunui Rualhleng showcased Mizoram’s vibrant traditional attire, underscoring the cultural heritage of her state. Adding to the cultural richness, singer Adoryllene D Sawian performed Khasi songs, enhancing the festival’s ambiance.
The camaraderie among the Northeast contingent was evident, contributing to the festival’s success. The event also featured tourism pavilions, with Meghalaya’s Director of Tourism, Cyril VD Diengdoh, promoting the state’s attractions. Mijito Vinito, India’s Consulate General in Istanbul, emphasized the festival’s importance in fostering Indo-Turkish artisan relationships.
As the festival concluded with memorable impressions, plans for the 20th edition in New Delhi on December 7-8 are already underway. This initiative continues to elevate North East India’s cultural and fashion landscape on the global stage, fostering cross-border appreciation and understanding.
