Accused in Badlapur Rape Case Killed in Police Encounter, Investigation Underway
Thane Police reported that Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur rape case, was shot dead following an encounter on Monday evening. Shinde snatched a service pistol from Sub-Inspector Nilesh More, firing three rounds at the police team. In response, Senior Inspector Sanjay Shinde fatally shot the accused.
The Maharashtra CID is expected to take over the investigation into Shinde’s death. Forensic experts have already examined the police vehicle, collecting blood samples and four bullet shells.
Shinde was accused of sexually assaulting two four-year-old girls and was being transferred from Taloja Central Jail to Thane for further questioning related to new charges filed by his estranged second wife.
Family members of the deceased have alleged a conspiracy, questioning how Shinde could access the firearm given his fear of such actions. The incident has provoked political upheaval, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defending the police, emphasizing the action was in self-defense. Opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar, however, called for a judicial probe, citing potential mishandling by police.
