Heartfelt Tributes Pour In for Beloved Former MLA Ardhendu Chaudhuri
Charitable Trust Celebrates Milestones with Service and Gratitude
SHILLONG, Sep 22: Rilbong Hall was the site of a poignant gathering on Sunday to mark the 20th death anniversary of former MLA Ardhendu Chaudhuri. The observance was also significant as it aligned with the 19th Foundation Day of the Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust and the 6th anniversary of its flagship initiative, ‘Aahar’.
Launched in 2018, ‘Aahar’ has been providing nutritious vegetarian meals to around 200 people daily at the Jhalupara Taxi Stand for a symbolic price of Rs 5. This initiative celebrated its milestone of 3,000 consecutive days of service, emphasizing the Trust’s dedication to serving the community with dignity.
Speeches and heartfelt tributes were a focal point of the event. Naba Bhatacharjee, among the speakers, reminisced about Ardhendu Chaudhuri’s advocacy for the recognition of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution—a motion he first introduced in the State Assembly in 2004. Bhatacharjee suggested compiling and publishing Chaudhuri’s Assembly speeches to honor his significant contributions.
Former MLA Manas Chaudhuri, Ardhendu’s brother, shared personal reflections, emphasizing how his late brother’s legacy continues through the work of the Charitable Trust. "We are all making an effort. Since its inception in 2005, we have utilized nearly Rs 3 crore, all thanks to the generosity of many," he stated, noting that he had donated his entire MLA salary to the Trust.
Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, BDR Tiwari, commended the Trust for its relentless, selfless service to humanity and extended best wishes for its ongoing mission.
The event also saw the felicitation of Trust workers and the distribution of blankets to some beneficiaries of ‘Aahar.’ In a gesture of goodwill, city businessman and trustee SN Beriwal donated Rs 1 lakh during the programme.
The anniversary celebration highlighted the enduring impact of Ardhendu Chaudhuri’s vision and the Trust’s unwavering commitment to social service, setting a noble example for others to follow.
