RANCHI: Political Tensions Soar as JMM Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Over Border Sealing
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has launched a strong critique against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of losing "mental balance" over the alleged sealing of the inter-state border. JMM General Secretary and Central Spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya warned that Banerjee’s decision to restrict the entry of trucks from Jharkhand could backfire, potentially isolating West Bengal from the western, northern, and southern regions of India. "I urge Didi to be more sensitive. Goods vehicles are not responsible for the floods in your state," Bhattacharya emphasized.
The conflict emerged as the Bengal government purportedly restricted truck entry from Jharkhand, protesting the continuous release of water from the Maithon and Panchet dams, managed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). This action has reportedly caused flooding in parts of Paschim Bardhaman and Medinipur districts, leaving thousands of trucks stranded along NH-2 and NH-4 near the border.
Mamata Banerjee has alleged that DVC’s actions have resulted in "man-made" floods and has threatened to sever ties with the corporation. She castigated the central government for not conducting sufficient dredging of the DVC dams, a failure that has led to excessive water release and subsequent flooding. Banerjee argued that the capacity of the dams has decreased by 36% due to sediment accumulation.
"This is not rainwater; this is water released by the government organization DVC from its dams. This is a man-made flood, and it’s unfortunate. Why isn’t the Centre dredging the DVC dams?" Banerjee stated, hinting at a larger conspiracy and promising a major movement against the issue.
The unfolding scenario has sparked significant political tension and disrupted trade routes, exacerbating the already strained relations between Jharkhand and West Bengal. Both states now stand at a critical juncture as they navigate these turbulent waters.
