Desperate Sikkim: Tibet Road Residents Battle Ongoing Water Crisis Amid Growing Outcry
Residents of Tibet Road have faced a persistent water shortage for over a week, causing considerable frustration among households. Multiple complaints to the relevant authorities have yet to yield any resolution.
Local residents report significant disruptions to their daily routines due to the water supply interruption. One resident expressed the community’s exasperation, stating, “We’ve been without proper water for days, and despite raising the issue, no solution has been provided.”
Upon contacting the water supply department, residents were informed that their complaint had been logged and personnel had been assigned to address the issue. However, no further updates or actions have been taken.
Despite Sikkim’s abundant water resources, including numerous rivers and streams, the region increasingly struggles with water scarcity. Rapid population growth and industrial development have placed significant pressure on both the quantity and quality of these resources, making water shortages more common.
In May 2024, Pakyong District faced similar water scarcity issues. District Collector Tashi Chophel led a review meeting that identified challenges such as debris from road construction by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which muddied the Richu water source. Despite efforts to rectify the situation, officials found these measures inadequate.
In response, DC Pakyong ordered another inspection and emphasized the need for more effective corrective actions. Interim solutions included scheduled water distribution for affected areas like Pakyong Bazar, while efforts to restore water pipelines continued.
The situation on Tibet Road underscores a broader issue in Sikkim, where swift population growth and industrial activities are exacerbating water scarcity. Residents continue to hope for a timely and effective resolution to their pressing water shortage woes.
