Crucial Decision Day: Sri Lankans Cast Votes in Pivotal Presidential Elections
In Sri Lanka, citizens are casting their votes for the Presidential elections, with over 17 million eligible voters set to elect the country’s ninth executive president. This marks the first election since the significant economic downturn of 2022. Voting commenced at 7 a.m. in more than 13,400 polling centers across the island and will continue until 4:30 p.m. Following the closing of the polls, ballot boxes will be transported to counting centers where the vote tallying process will begin later in the evening.
To ensure the security of the election process, more than 60,000 police officers alongside the Special Task Force and military units have been deployed across the island. Additionally, 116 international observers are present to monitor the proceedings and ensure their fairness.
Among the 38 candidates running for the presidency, the primary contest is between the incumbent President Ranil Wickremasinghe, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
