EY India Head’s Heartfelt Assurance: Supporting Anna’s Family with Utmost Care and Privacy after CA’s Tragic Passing
A tragic incident involving Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant who joined EY Pune in March 2024, has sparked significant outrage on social media. Anna passed away on July 20, allegedly due to excessive work pressure, which led her mother to pen a heartrending letter to EY India’s head, Rajiv Memani, calling for changes in the company’s work culture.
The letter from Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, highlighted the detrimental impact of overworking and described how Anna, who was full of dreams and enthusiasm, saw her life tragically cut short. Anita’s plea for rectifying the firm’s work environment has resonated widely, igniting public debates about corporate responsibility and employee well-being.
In response, Rajiv Memani, EY India Chairman, sent an email to the company’s staff, expressing his deep condolences. He acknowledged ongoing discussions about Anna’s death on social media and emphasized that the firm is dedicated to maintaining a supportive and healthy work environment. Memani highlighted existing well-being programs and anonymous communication channels like the Speak Up forum and Ethics Hotline, promising to enhance these avenues further.
Memani assured employees that their health and well-being are paramount and encouraged them to voice their concerns. He also stressed that the firm respects Anna’s family’s privacy while providing all possible assistance during this difficult time. The Minister of State for Labour, Shobha Karandlaje, confirmed that there will be a thorough investigation into the allegations of an unsafe work environment at EY.
This unfortunate incident has prompted EY to recommit to fostering a balanced and humane workplace, vowing to learn from this loss and ensure the safety and well-being of its employees in the future.
