Assam Women Journalists’ Forum Hosts Climate Change and Gender Reporting Workshop

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Assam Women Journalists’ Forum (AWJF), in partnership with Gauhati University’s Department of Communication and Journalism, conducted a training session on "Reporting Climate Change and Gender" on Thursday.

In recent years, climate change has significantly affected many parts of India, particularly Assam and the North East, where frequent floods and earthquakes have disrupted lives and livelihoods. The session aimed to equip journalists with the skills needed to report effectively on these issues, with an emphasis on gender perspectives.

Dr. Bharati Bharali, Assistant Professor at Gauhati University, welcomed participants and praised AWJF’s initiative. Durba Ghosh, AWJF president and PTI Bureau Chief, introduced AWJF, noting the absence of women editors in mainstream media in Assam and expressing hope for change within the next decade.

Notable attendees included Jayantakrishna Sarmah, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Dhrubajyoti Saharia, Secretary of University Classes, who provided valuable insights.

AWJF members and seasoned journalists, Mubina Akhtar and Ratna Bharali, shared crucial stories illustrating the local impact of climate change on communities and livelihoods. Akhtar highlighted the threat to Assam’s Muga silk heritage and the positive outcomes of her reportage. Bharali discussed recent displacement and labor issues resulting from climate change in rural areas.

AWJF Vice President and news editor Samim Sultana addressed pay disparity, emphasizing the need for gender-sensitive reporting. Independent journalist Chandrani Sinha spoke on amplifying local stories globally and discussed climate resilience and the implications of political instability on climate financing, using Bangladesh as a case study.

The workshop’s purpose was to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical newsroom skills, preparing journalism students for modern media challenges. AWJF, a network dedicated to the professional growth of women in media, aims to collaborate with Mass Communication departments to enhance journalism education.

This session marks an essential step towards better equipping journalists to tackle the intersecting issues of climate change and gender effectively.
