Shillong, September 18: The immersion of Ganesh idols in Hyderabad’s Hussain Sagar Lake entered its second day on Wednesday, with large idols still being brought to the lake for immersion. The process primarily took place along NTR Marg and Necklace Road.
Due to the ongoing festivities, traffic restrictions remained around Hussain Sagar, causing diversions and significant congestion. Commuters, including office-goers and school children, faced delays on major roads in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) reported that over 1.05 lakh idols had been immersed in Hussain Sagar and other water bodies since Tuesday morning. The immersion process at Hussain Sagar is expected to continue until the afternoon. Authorities have urged devotees to cooperate and expedite the process.
Despite police requests to complete the immersions by Tuesday night, delays meant the event extended into the second day. Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Anand revealed that the 25,000-strong police force worked tirelessly through the night to manage the idol processions. By 5 a.m. Wednesday, the situation had improved from the previous year, with the tail end of the procession reaching Moazzam Jahi Market.
GHMC officials stated that 1,05,707 idols were immersed by Tuesday night at 72 designated points within GHMC limits, including lakes, excavated ponds, and portable ponds. Of these, 12,320 idols were immersed at three locations around Hussain Sagar, with IDL Lake in Moosapet witnessing the highest number at 26,546.
The municipal authorities arranged elaborate measures, employing 468 cranes for the immersions at five large lakes and 73 exclusive ponds, including 38 cranes stationed at Hussain Sagar. GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata noted that 15,000 personnel, spanning sanitation, engineering, and other sectors, are working in shifts to manage the event smoothly.
