Congress has criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah following his remarks on the situation in Manipur, challenging why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not visited the state if conditions are as normal as claimed.
At a recent press conference, Shah stated that the government is engaging with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to secure lasting peace, and has begun fencing the India-Myanmar border to prevent infiltration. He noted that aside from three days of violence last week, Manipur has been mostly calm with no major incidents for the past three months.
However, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh countered Shah’s positive outlook. “If the situation is as normal as claimed, why hasn’t the Prime Minister found time to visit Manipur since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023?” Ramesh questioned in a social media post. He also highlighted the absence of a full-time governor, the prolonged leave of the state’s Chief Secretary, and the non-functioning of the BJP office in Imphal.
Shah defended the government’s measures, citing the deployment of Central Reserve Police Force personnel and ending the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR). He assured the public that the situation is under control and stated that an announcement regarding Prime Minister Modi’s visit would be made in due course.
The ethnic conflict in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has resulted in over 220 fatalities with no clear resolution in sight. The Congress continues to press for a stronger response from the government, including a visit from the Prime Minister.
The United Naga Council has also voiced concerns, condemning a recent bomb attack at a Manipur minister’s residence in Ukhrul.
Shah’s assurances and the Congress’ criticisms put the spotlight on the government’s handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur, raising questions about the steps being taken to restore lasting peace and order in the region.
