Atishi Marlena to Succeed Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi Chief Minister

The announcement emerged from a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators on Tuesday, September 17, where Atishi’s candidacy received unanimous support. Atishi, aged 43, is a prominent figure in the Delhi administration, overseeing critical departments such as Education and Public Works. An alumna of Oxford University and a Rhodes Scholar, she has been instrumental in revolutionizing Delhi’s public school system, a cornerstone of the AAP’s governance model.
Representing the Kalkaji constituency, Atishi was inducted into the cabinet after the arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia amid the liquor policy scandal. Her role has since expanded, often stepping in for Kejriwal and Sisodia at public appearances and media engagements, thereby solidifying her influence within the party.
In a notable development this past August, Kejriwal had handpicked Atishi to hoist the national flag during Delhi’s Independence Day celebrations, a move later obstructed by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. This act nevertheless highlighted the party’s confidence in her leadership capabilities.
A formal announcement from AAP is anticipated shortly, marking a significant transition in Delhi’s political landscape as Atishi Marlena prepares to take on the mantle of Chief Minister.
