Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Among 59 Accused in Attempted Murder Case in Bangladesh
Dhaka: A new legal case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 58 others, alleging their involvement in an attempted murder during an anti-government protest. The incident took place in Dinajpur on August 4, when Fahim Faisal, a 22-year-old student from Rajbati area, claimed he was shot and injured amidst the demonstration, The Daily Star reported.
The case was officially lodged at Kotwali police station by Faisal, who stated he was wounded during an attack on protesters near Dinajpur Sadar Hospital. Demonstrators, associated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, were reportedly assaulted with firearms and local weapons. Faisal sustained injuries to his face, chest, and arms, and received treatment at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where he partially recovered.
Among the accused are former whip Iqbalur Rahim, Dinajpur Sadar Upazila Chairman Imdad Sarkar, and the general secretary of the district’s Jubo League, Anwar Hossain. Sheikh Hasina and Iqbalur Rahim are listed as the primary and secondary accused, respectively.
According to Officer-in-Charge Farid Hossain, Sheikh Hasina now faces a total of 155 cases, which include allegations of murder, crimes against humanity, genocide, abduction, and several instances of attempted murder. This recent case adds to the list, marking further legal trouble for the former prime minister and her associates since the fall of her government.
This development comes amidst increasing political tension in Bangladesh, as questions arise regarding potential requests for Sheikh Hasina’s return from India.
