In a significant development, the Banderdewa Police, with crucial assistance from their counterparts in Sikkim, successfully apprehended Kalu Chetry, alias Tenzing Tsering, a 28-year-old resident of Tawang. Chetry was arrested in Gangtok on September 15, 2024, after an intensive four-month manhunt.
Chetry, the son of the late Hari Bahadur Chetry, was sought in connection with a kidnapping case registered under Banderdewa Police Station with Case No. 31/24 U/S 364(A)/34 and Section 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act. The incident, which occurred on May 4, 2024, involved Chetry and three accomplices who lured a woman to the PTC Gate in Banderdewa under the false pretext of selling local ornaments. They subsequently abducted her, took her near the Assam border, threatened her with a pistol, and robbed her of ₹3 lakh before fleeing towards Assam.
The Banderdewa Police, led by SI Koj Tada and supported by Constables Tade Bomdan, Tanik Hichik, and Lady Constable Kago Yamung, initiated a comprehensive search for Chetry. Their persistent efforts paid off when Chetry was located in Gangtok. The operation was significantly bolstered by the support of the SHO of Sardar Police Station in Gangtok, under the guidance of SP Naharlagun Mihin Gambo and OC PS Banderdewa Kipa Hamak.
Following his arrest, Chetry has been transported back to Banderdewa for further investigation. Preliminary inquiries indicate his involvement in multiple thefts and fraud cases related to local ornaments.
This arrest marks a critical step in the ongoing investigation, shedding light on the broader network of criminal activities connected to Chetry. Authorities are committed to pursuing justice and ensuring the safety of the community.
