Outrage Sparks Probe: Assam DGP Demands Justice After Alleged Inappropriate Physical Checks in Women’s Recruitment Exam
The Director General of Police (DGP) in Assam, G.P. Singh, has ordered an investigation into allegations of inappropriate physical checks conducted on female candidates during the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) for Grade III positions. The incident, reported at Swahid Smriti Senior Secondary School in Belsor, Nalbari district, came to light when a distressed candidate shared her experience on Facebook, condemning the examination process as “disgraceful and pathetic.” She alleged that female personnel carried out intrusive body searches, including checks undergarments without providing privacy cover, which she deemed unacceptable.
In response to the outcry, DGP Singh mandated a thorough inquiry by the Range DIG. Highlighting that the Range DIG Central Western Range, District Commissioner, and District Superintendent of Police of Nalbari are all women, Singh assured a swift fact-finding process to facilitate further action.
The incident has incited widespread outrage, with many candidates expressing their discomfort and mental distress. The complainant noted that friends at other centers did not report similar treatment, calling upon Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take immediate action to prevent future occurrences.
Additionally, DGP Singh disclosed a separate incident in North Lakhimpur, where cheating materials were found concealed in a female candidate’s undergarments during the examination process. An FIR has been filed regarding this incident.
The recruitment examination, managed by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) on behalf of the State Level Recruitment Commission (SLRC), saw 1,123,204 candidates across 2,305 centers statewide. Despite these issues, the examination proceeded as scheduled, with over 70,000 invigilators ensuring the smooth conduct of the test.
