Victory and Valor: Iraqi and US Forces Annihilate Top IS Commander in Bold Joint Operation
BAGHDAD — Iraqi and American forces have killed a senior Islamic State (IS) commander, Abu Ali Al-Tunisi, along with several other key militants during an operation in Iraq’s Anbar province, the Iraqi military reported on Friday. This late August operation, executed with the Iraqi National Intelligence Service and Iraq’s air force, also killed Ahmad Hamed Zwein, the IS deputy commander in Iraq.
Previously, a joint raid by U.S. and Iraqi forces in the western desert resulted in at least 15 militant deaths and injuries to seven American troops, five of whom were hurt in the raid and two during subsequent falls. Further operations seized weapons, electronics, and explosive belts, identifying 14 IS commanders through DNA tests.
Though IS was territorially defeated in Iraq by 2017 and in Syria by 2019, sleeper cell attacks across both countries have surged, causing numerous casualties. The U.S. Central Command announced another recent strike in eastern Syria, neutralizing an IS cell member preparing an IED against coalition forces.
Current U.S. military operations in Iraq involve approximately 2,500 troops, whose future presence will be determined by security conditions and the readiness of Iraqi forces.
