Kerala HC’s Bold Verdict: Halting Destructive Illegal Constructions in Serene Chokramudi Hills, Idukki
Kerala High Court Halts Illegal Construction in Landslide-Prone Chokramudi Hills
Kochi: In a significant move to curb unauthorised construction in the ecologically sensitive Chokramudi Hills near Munnar, the Kerala High Court on Friday directed the Idukki district collector to take stringent measures to halt such activities. A Division Bench, led by Justice Anil K. Narendran, issued this directive while hearing a writ petition against illegal constructions and encroachments in Munnar and other areas of the Idukki district.
The court was informed about ongoing large-scale construction activities in the Chokramudi Hills, part of the Bison Valley Village, which have heightened the risk of massive landslides in downstream areas. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has identified the Chokramudi region as a high hazard landslide-prone area, categorizing it within the Red Zone on their hazard susceptibility map.
This directive underscores the urgent need for regulatory oversight to prevent potential environmental catastrophes in the region.
