Heartfelt Apology: Chin Militant Group’s Emotional Letter Addressing Mizo Teens’ Kidnapping
CDF-HuaIngoram Apologizes for Abduction of Mizo Teenagers
The militant group CDF-HuaIngoram has issued a formal apology to the Village Council President (VCP) of Zokhawthar town in Mizoram’s Champhai district for abducting two Mizo teenage boys earlier this month. Lalrodinga, General Secretary of CDF-HuaIngoram, expressed gratitude to the Village Council and local NGOs for their cooperation in resolving the conflict peacefully, according to a letter he sent.
Lalrodinga clarified that the two boys, detained on suspicion of assaulting an injured CDF-HuaIngoram soldier, were released once their Indian citizenship was confirmed. He also apologized for any unintentional violations of international law that may have occurred during the detention.
The incident began on September 1, 2024, when five Mizo boys traveled to Rih Dil Lake on two Chinese-made motorbikes. They were stopped and assaulted by CDF-HuaIngoram cadres due to a prior dispute. While three boys managed to escape, the two remaining teenagers were held hostage.
Initially detained at Rih Dil Lake, the boys were transferred to the CDF-HuaIngoram camp in Seik Village on September 3, 2024. During their captivity, they were reportedly tortured, with their heads shaved, cigarette burns inflicted on their bodies, and one boy losing two teeth.
The boys were released on September 6, 2024, following the intervention of Assam Rifles and pressure on the Chin National Army and CDF-HuaIngoram. The abduction sparked public outrage in Zokhawthar, with residents reminding the Chin forces of Mizoram’s past hospitality towards them.
This serious incident underscores the fragile nature of local tensions and the necessity for continued dialogue to prevent future conflicts.
