Carolina Dybeck Happe Joins Microsoft as New Chief Operations Officer
Microsoft Names Ex-GE Exec Carolina Dybeck Happe As COO To Drive AI Strategy
Microsoft has appointed former GE finance chief Carolina Dybeck Happe as its new Chief Operations Officer (COO) in a bid to strengthen its leadership team amid a robust push into artificial intelligence. Dybeck Happe, who served as GE’s finance chief from March 2020 to September 2023, was pivotal in the company’s turnaround and the completion of the energy infrastructure unit GE Vernova spin-off in April 2024.
With a track record of holding senior finance roles at various companies such as A.P. Moeller-Maersk and Assa Abloy, Dybeck Happe brings a wealth of experience to Microsoft. Her appointment aligns with the tech giant’s efforts to close the gap with Amazon Web Services in the cloud services market.
"In this newly created role, she will join the senior leadership team (SLT), reporting directly to me," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. "Dybeck Happe will be instrumental in accelerating our company-wide AI transformation."
The SLT, which has driven strategic decisions such as investments in OpenAI and the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, will now include Dybeck Happe. Her appointment coincides with Microsoft’s recent lessons from the Crowdstrike outage impacting their devices, underscoring a heightened focus on operational resilience.
Earlier this year, Microsoft also appointed Mustafa Suleyman, an AI industry veteran and co-founder of DeepMind, to lead its AI operations and join the SLT. To offer investors better insights into its AI-related financials, Microsoft restructured its reporting by moving some search and news advertising revenue under its Azure cloud-computing unit.
This strategic leadership change underscores Microsoft’s aggressive AI and cloud service ambitions as it seeks to solidify its position in the tech landscape.
