Urgent Alert: California Attorney General Warns Tech Giants Against Deceptive Voter Manipulation
California Attorney General Rob Bonta urged tech executives to intensify efforts to safeguard voters from “deception, intimidation, and dissuasion” ahead of the November elections. In a letter dated Wednesday, Bonta addressed CEOs of major tech firms including Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Reddit, TikTok, X, and YouTube, stressing the importance of their platforms being free from manipulations that mislead voters about their constitutional rights.
Bonta emphasized that millions of Californians depend on social media and AI services for election-related news, and cited California laws that prohibit misleading information about voting logistics and the malicious distribution of deceptive media targeting candidates. The warning follows pop icon Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris for president and her condemnation of AI-generated images falsely indicating her support for Donald Trump, images which Trump shared on his Truth Social platform.
Additionally, X owner Elon Musk recently posted an AI-generated image portraying Harris in a negative light, aligning with his endorsement of Trump. With AI tools like Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s Dall-E, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Musk’s xAI Grok-2 enabling rapid creation of fake political images, Bonta’s letter underscores the urgent need for tech companies to prevent misuse and protect voter integrity.
