Two Killed, Several Injured in Violent Eviction Clash in Assam’s Kamrup
Kamrup (Metropolitan), Assam – An eviction drive in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district of Assam turned deadly on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others, including security personnel. The violence erupted when police opened fire to disperse a mob attacking them during the operation.
A joint team from Sonapur circle office and the police arrived in Kochutoli village to evict Bengali-speaking Muslim villagers, who had reoccupied land from which they had previously been removed. According to The Economic Times, over 150 people were residing illegally on a 100-bigha plot.
Upon arrival, the team faced resistance from villagers, including women, who armed themselves with sharp weapons, stones, and sticks. The confrontation led to multiple injuries, including a magistrate and around 20 security personnel. In response, police opened fire, resulting in casualties and damage to a police vehicle, reported PTI.
The deceased were identified as Jubahir Ali and Haider Ali, both of whom succumbed to gunshot injuries at Sonapur district hospital. More than 50 individuals were reportedly injured and received medical attention, with those sustaining minor injuries being released after first aid.
Among the injured officials were Sonapur Circle Officer Nitul Khataniar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Mrinal Deka, and Hirak Jyoti Saikia, the officer-in-charge of Sonapur police station.
In light of the situation, additional security forces have been dispatched to the village, and senior civil and police officials are on-site. An official announced that while the immediate situation is under control, tensions persist.
A senior police officer, preferring anonymity, mentioned to The Economic Times that the ongoing eviction had previously faced no significant issues. "Tensions emerged specifically on Thursday when protestors attacked us with sticks and sharp objects, injuring personnel and damaging vehicles," the officer stated.
