IIT-Guwahati’s Shocking Decision: Journalists Barred from Campus, Sparking Outrage
IIT-Guwahati Requests Media to Refrain from Campus Reporting Amid Student Death Protests
Guwahati: In response to the death of Binmalesh Kumar, a 21-year-old third-year BTech Computer Science and Engineering student, the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) has asked media personnel to avoid visiting the campus. The student’s alleged suicide, discovered at Brahmaputra hostel, has incited significant unrest among the student body, who accuse the administration of imposing excessive academic pressure and strict attendance policies.
Journalists have been denied entry to the campus amidst ongoing protests and heightened tensions. IIT-Guwahati authorities, through a formal statement, have emphasized the urgency with which they are addressing the situation, promising to welcome media for a meeting with the director once the situation stabilizes.
The statement implores journalists for patience and cooperation during this critical period, adding, “We request members of the press to understand and cooperate with us in these difficult times and give us a few days to bring the situation back to normal.” Security personnel have been placed at the main entrance to prevent media entry, ensuring no disruptions to the efforts to restore calm.
Furthermore, the institute has announced the implementation of new measures aimed at enhancing student well-being, although specific details were not disclosed.
The tragic event has brought administrative practices, particularly concerning student welfare and academic regulations, under scrutiny, highlighting the urgent need for reform to prevent further incidents.
