Defending India’s Linguistic Richness: BRS’ KTR Challenges Centralized Hindi Mandate
KT Rama Rao Criticizes Union Home Minister’s Push for Hindi
Hyderabad, September 12 (IANS): Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President KT Rama Rao raised concerns over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s advocacy for increased Hindi acceptance. Rama Rao, speaking out on social media platform X, questioned the rationale behind this push and warned that language chauvinism could be detrimental to India’s unity.
Reacting to Shah’s remarks made during a session of the newly-formed Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, Rama Rao queried, “Why exactly do we need increased Hindi acceptance? Why not promote Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati etc.? Hindi is one among the 22 official languages of India. Why only push Hindi?”
Rao emphasized India’s rich linguistic diversity as a major strength and cautioned against the perils of imposing a singular language. Shah had earlier stated that Hindi’s association with employment and technology, along with government efforts to integrate new technologies with Hindi, justified the need for its acceptance.
This is not the first instance where KTR has opposed the central government’s Hindi promotion. In 2022, he penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, denouncing a Parliamentary Committee’s recommendations to make Hindi the medium of instruction in technical and non-technical educational institutions, including central universities. KTR labeled the move unconstitutional and highlighted its potential disastrous impact, including the division it could cause across various regions of India.
He also pointed out the disadvantage faced by students educated in regional languages who miss out on central government job opportunities, as qualifying exams are predominantly in Hindi and English.
Rama Rao’s criticism underscores a broader debate on the importance of preserving linguistic diversity versus the push for a unifying language, reflecting the ongoing tension in India’s language policy.
