Groundbreaking SpaceX Polaris Dawn Launch: Dramatic Spacewalk Attempt Set to Make History
SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission achieved liftoff on Tuesday from Florida, utilizing a Falcon 9 rocket to place the Dragon capsule “Resilience” into Earth’s orbit. This mission marks the inaugural effort of three pre-purchased by billionaire and Shift4 founder Jared Isaacman within the Polaris Program, aimed at advancing human spaceflight.
The multi-day mission, distinct from journeys to the International Space Station, is designed to be a free-flying excursion through varied orbits, aiming to venture further from Earth than previous missions of its kind. Notably, the Polaris Dawn crew plans to undertake SpaceX’s first-ever spacewalk—a bold maneuver previously reserved for government astronaut missions. This extravehicular activity (EVA) is anticipated to last approximately two hours.
Beyond the spacewalk, the crew will conduct around 40 scientific and research experiments, contributing valuable data to the field of space exploration. The launch, initially hindered by adverse weather and a helium leak, finally proceeded after multiple postponements.
Commanded by Jared Isaacman, who also led the historic Inspiration4 mission in 2021, the crew includes the first SpaceX employees to venture into space, Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis, along with a fourth crew member. This mission marks SpaceX’s 14th crewed flight and its fifth private human spaceflight endeavor.
Polaris Dawn is a significant milestone in private space exploration, underscoring SpaceX’s growing role in the industry and the increasing collaboration between private ventures and scientific research.
