Urgent: Harris and Walz Launch Critical Post-Debate Tour of Swing States in Heated Race
Vice President Kamala Harris will make stops in battleground states following Tuesday’s debate with Donald Trump, as a recent poll indicates a tight race. The New York Times-Siena College poll showed Trump leading Harris 48% to 47%, within the margin of error, suggesting Harris’ momentum might have slowed while Trump’s support remains steady. Most polls since Harris replaced Joe Biden atop the Democratic ticket in July have shown her with a slight edge over Trump.
Trump’s campaign pollster, Tony Fabrizio, asserted that surveys reflecting the actual electorate show Trump in the lead. Meanwhile, Harris’ communications adviser, Brian Fallon, noted that Harris has viewed herself as an underdog and continues to campaign with that mindset, emphasizing the extensive work needed before Election Day.
While only about 10% of poll respondents felt they needed more information about Trump, 31% expressed the same about Harris. This week, Harris will campaign in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, while her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, heads to Michigan and Wisconsin. Additionally, Walz’s wife Gwen will visit Georgia, New Hampshire, and Maine, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff will travel to Nevada, Arizona, and Florida.
Florida, traditionally favorable to Trump, presents an opportunity for Democrats due to a ballot initiative on abortion rights, also present in Arizona. The Harris campaign plans to launch a new ad in seven swing states and Nebraska, focusing on economic issues such as banning corporate price-gouging, capping prescription drug costs, and addressing the housing shortage.
Harris emphasized the need to move past divisiveness and unify the country, positioning her message as a call for major change, which is echoed by more than 60% of voters in the New York Times poll. However, only 25% believe Harris represents this change, compared to 53% for Trump. The poll surveyed 1,695 registered voters between Sept. 3-6 with a margin of error of up to 2.8 percentage points.
