Fiery War of Words: What Harris and Trump Say About Each Other on Social Media
In a historic moment, the 2024 Republican and Democratic presidential contenders will participate in their first debate after just seven weeks of campaigning. Following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the Democratic frontrunner. An analysis by The New York Times examined the social media interactions between Harris and former President Donald Trump from July 21 to September 6, finding that Trump’s attacks on Harris are more frequent and harshly personal.
Trump targets Harris with an average of over three derogatory posts per day on his platform, Truth Social, often resorting to personal insults, including derogatory remarks about her competence and racial identity. His labels for Harris span from “Comrade Kamala Harris” to “Crazy Kamala,” showcasing a consistent pattern of name-calling.
In contrast, Harris’s social media criticisms of Trump on X (formerly Twitter) are far less personal. She highlights his legal troubles and positions herself as a defender against “predators, fraudsters, and cheaters,” drawing on her background as a prosecutor.
Both candidates also attack each other on policy issues. Trump frequently ties Harris to the “Biden administration’s border czar” and falsely labels her as a “communist” aiming to “destroy America.” Harris criticizes Trump for derailing a bipartisan border security bill and accuses him of economic policies that favor the rich while she pledges to support the middle class. She also focuses on reproductive rights, emphasizing Trump’s role in appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.
Their exchanges on economic issues reflect traditional partisan stances, with Harris condemning Trump’s prioritization of billionaires and Trump attributing inflation and market instability to Harris. Trump’s social media posts are marked by misspellings, falsehoods, and jarring grammar, while Harris maintains a more conventional political discourse.
