Empowering Hope: Celebrating 35 Years of Aaranyak’s Inspiring Conservation Journey in Assam
GUWAHATI: Aaranyak, a prominent biodiversity conservation organization, inaugurated its 35th-anniversary celebration on Monday, emphasizing human-wildlife coexistence. The event featured prominent speakers who underscored various aspects of wildlife conservation and its challenges.
Arvind Kumar Chaurasia, Deputy Director of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), highlighted the critical role humans play in wildlife conservation. He cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a stark reminder of the dangers of human interference with wildlife. Chaurasia stressed the need for international collaboration to combat wildlife crime, advocating for a global law to ensure coordinated action against wildlife criminals. He also recommended employing AI tools in prevention efforts and empowering investigation officers worldwide with scientific methods to deter wildlife crimes.
The event also honored Anwaruddin Choudhury, known as the “Birdman of Assam.” Choudhury received the Third Lifetime Achievement Award of Aaranyak for his substantial contributions to nature conservation in the Northeast.
P.L.N. Raju, Special Secretary to Assam’s Department of Science, Technology & Climate Change, discussed the potential of space technology, geospatial tools, and drones in wildlife conservation and crime prevention. His insights highlighted the integration of advanced technology in safeguarding wildlife.
Aaranyak’s founder secretary and CEO, Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, reflected on the organization’s 35-year journey, showcasing its achievements, including platforms for young conservationists and significant legal victories for biodiversity conservation. He paid tribute to four young conservationists, Meherun Nesha, Ananta Borah, Salina Sultana, and Bipul Das, who had tragically passed away.
The inaugural event included a documentary on Aaranyak’s journey, a photography exhibition, and a book launch. Wildlife forensic scientist Udayan Borthakur announced that the celebration would continue throughout the year with various activities, including presenting a grassroots conservation award in 2024.
Aaranyak’s enduring commitment to conservation and innovation continues to inspire and drive efforts to secure a sustainable future for both humans and wildlife.
