Assam Police Launches SITs to Tackle Illegal Online Trading Scams
GUWAHATI: In a decisive move to combat illegal online trading in Assam, the Assam Police has established 14 Special Investigation Teams (SITs). These teams will investigate cases connected to unregulated online trading activities that have caused significant financial losses to investors due to their non-compliance with SEBI and RBI regulations.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the state government might recommend a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the online trading scam if deemed necessary. “No one can evade the police for long,” stated CM Sarma, reinforcing the government’s commitment to tackling these fraudulent activities.
To date, police have arrested 59 individuals, issued 22 look-out circulars, and identified numerous companies operating illicitly within the state’s online trading sector. The ongoing investigations are being conducted under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, and relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita.
DGP GP Singh took to social media platform ‘X’ to detail the police’s actions: “For proper investigation of the cases registered in connection with Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 14 SITs have been formed which would report to a Supervision & Monitoring group at @AssamCid Hq under ADGP & IGP CID.” Many involved traders have been apprehended, though several remain at large.
A significant development involves a case registered against a major suspect in Dibrugarh, which has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probing by a dedicated SIT. Additionally, disciplinary actions have been taken against two police personnel implicated in these schemes. Lance Naik Saroj Deka has been dismissed from service, while Inspector Jitumoni Deka has been suspended for his dubious associations with parties involved in unregulated deposit schemes.
Further, IIT Guwahati has partnered with Airbus to enhance aviation and logistics education in Assam, reflecting ongoing modernization efforts in the state.
This summary encapsulates the Assam Police’s intensified efforts to address illegal online trading and the associated legal and administrative actions taken.
