Manipur Deploys Military Chopper and Anti-Drone Systems Following Violence in Jiribam District
Imphal, September 7 (IANS) — In the wake of escalating violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, the state government deployed a military chopper for aerial patrols and anti-drone systems to counter militant activity. This move comes after five people were killed in separate incidents on Saturday.
A senior police official in Imphal reported that Kuki militants attacked Nungchappi village, killing 63-year-old Yurembam Kulendra Singha, a Meitei community member. The militants continued firing in Rasidpur village, where Baspatimayum Lakhi Kumar Sharma (41) was killed in retaliation by village volunteers.
Security forces, led by senior police officials, responded to the area and were met with gunfire. Upon searching, three bodies of suspected militants were discovered. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) claimed that UNLF militants killed four Kuki-Zo village volunteers in Jiribam the same day.
In addition to these incidents, nine sophisticated firearms, including sniper and assault rifles, 21 types of ammunition, explosives, grenades, and a wireless set were recovered from Bishnupur and Kangpokpi districts. Intermittent firing continued in several Jiribam villages near the Assam border until noon.
Due to the heightened violence, a significant contingent of Assam Rifles, other Central Armed Police Forces, and Manipur police commandos have been deployed in the conflict zones. Authorities have established numerous "Nakas" (check gates) in sensitive areas, both valley and hill regions, to prevent militant movement.
Following recent attacks, the Manipur government ordered all educational institutions closed on Saturday and instructed security forces to remain on high alert. The violence continued with a powerful bomb attack on former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng’s residence, killing a 78-year-old man, injuring six others including a 13-year-old girl.
The combined security forces are intensifying their counter-insurgency operations, having destroyed three bunkers in Churachandpur district. Senior police officials are currently stationed in the most affected regions to monitor the security situation closely.
Authorities have appealed to the public for cooperation and warned that any attempt to disrupt security forces or loot arms will be dealt with severely.
