Sikkim MP Attends International Peace Charter Meeting in Cambodia
Gangtok, Sep 07, 2024: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba participated in the international ‘Consultative Meeting on Peace Charter’ held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event, co-hosted by the Asian Vision Institute, the National Assembly of Cambodia, and the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP) Asia Pacific Regional Office, featured opening remarks by Suos Yara, Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Information of the Cambodian National Assembly.
Indra Hang Subba engaged in a roundtable discussion focused on conflict prevention, transitional justice, peace-building processes, and cooperation. He highlighted India’s belief in the ideology of ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family,’ attributing the success of India’s G20 presidency to this principle. He emphasized India’s proactive role in global diplomacy and trust-building efforts.
Subba also highlighted India’s success in maintaining peace and stability despite its diverse population of over 1.47 billion, which reflects in its rapid economic growth. He stressed the importance of addressing climate change in the proposed peace charter, citing the risks posed by unmonitored glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. According to Subba, climate change mitigation should be a core pillar of the Peace Charter.
Furthermore, Subba addressed the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements, which, while driving growth, also exacerbate economic, educational, and social inequalities. He expressed pride in discussing Sikkim’s peace initiatives and India’s efforts to promote international peace at such a prestigious forum.
Post-event, MP Indra Hang Subba met with the President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, expressing gratitude for the initiative to advance international peace.
