Heartbreaking Injustice: Kolkata Doctor’s Parents Accuse Police of Cover-Up and Bribery in Rape-Murder Case

On September 4, 2024, a candlelight march took place in Kolkata to protest the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The family of the deceased doctor joined the demonstration, accusing Kolkata Police of trying to cover up the case by swiftly cremating the body.

The grieving parents claimed they were kept from seeing their daughter’s body and that a senior officer attempted to bribe them. They joined the protest to support junior doctors in their fight for justice. The incident sparked statewide protests, with various sectors demanding accountability.

A civic volunteer was arrested for involvement in the crime, and the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI in mid-August. Additionally, the court shifted an investigation into financial irregularities at the hospital from a State-constituted team to the central agency. Recently, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, for alleged financial misconduct.
