Outrage in Delhi HC as Petition Seeks Immediate Ban on Anubhav Sinha’s Controversial IC 814 Series: The Kandahar Hijack
The release of Netflix’s series “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” has sparked intense controversy in India due to accusations of historical inaccuracies and potential religious insensitivity. The dramatization of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814 by the Pakistan-based terrorist group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen is under fire for allegedly misrepresenting the hijackers’ identities.
The uproar led to a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Delhi High Court, filed by Surjit Singh Yadav, president of the Hindu Sena. Yadav’s petition seeks a ban on the series, arguing that it inaccurately portrays the hijackers with Hindu names like “Bhola” and “Shankar,” which are alternatives for the Hindu deity Shiva. This, according to the petitioner, distorts historical facts and offends Hindu sentiments.
The PIL asserts that such misrepresentation damages the accuracy of historical records and spreads harmful stereotypes. The petitioner has called for judicial intervention to prevent public misunderstanding and potential harm.
Amid the growing controversy, the central government has summoned Netflix India’s content head. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has demanded clarification on the contentious aspects of the series, particularly the depiction of the hijackers. Officials are concerned that the series could evoke negative emotions nationwide.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha and released on August 29 on Netflix India, the series has garnered positive reviews for its gripping portrayal of the hijacking events. Despite critical acclaim, the allegations of historical inaccuracies and religious offense have raised significant concerns about its societal impact.
Produced by Matchbox Shots and Benaras Mediaworks, the show marks Sinha’s streaming debut. It is based on the book “Flight Into Fear” by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury, detailing the complex negotiations in Delhi and Kandahar.
Anubhav Sinha has expressed gratitude for the positive reception amidst calls for a boycott, stating, “I am indebted.”
