Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated a 131-feet tall National Flag Mast at Barik Point in Shillong on Tuesday. The event also saw the unveiling of a comprehensive master plan aimed at redeveloping Barik into a significant public space, poised to become an iconic tourist attraction showcasing the nation’s diversity.
Expressing his pride, Sangma took to social media, stating, “Our National Flag stands tall at Barik Point, Shillong- a proud symbol of our nation’s unity and diversity. Fills me with immense pride to inaugurate the 131-feet tall National Flag Mast this morning.”
Accompanied by DGP Idashisha Nongrang, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, and Sports & Youth Affairs Department Secretary Isawanda Laloo, among others, Sangma outlined the redevelopment vision for Barik, emphasizing its future role as a major tourist draw.
In addition to the redevelopment plans, the Meghalaya government is addressing urban challenges, including traffic congestion and illegal parking. Efforts to improve the public transportation system include the introduction of electric buses. The state expects to receive 50 electric buses under the Prime Minister’s eBus Sewa Scheme from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, vital for reducing carbon emissions, slated to arrive next year. An additional Rs 13 crore has been sanctioned for setting up an e-bus depot and power infrastructure in Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong Township.
Furthermore, the government is progressing with the Shillong Smart City Project, including the establishment of an Integrated Command and Control Centre in New Shillong Township, a project worth Rs 214 crore, anticipated to be operational by next month.
In related infrastructure news, the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase III faces delays, with a new completion deadline set for March 2025.
These comprehensive initiatives signify concerted efforts by the Meghalaya government to boost infrastructural development, enhance public amenities, and promote sustainability in the region.
