Thrilling Victory: Beatriz Haddad Maia, Iga Swiatek, and Caroline Wozniacki Triumphantly Advance to Round of 16!
New York: Beatriz Haddad Maia Advances to US Open Round of 16
Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil clawed back from a sluggish start to defeat No. 15 seed Anna Kalinskaya, 6-3, 6-1, securing a spot in the US Open Round of 16. The 28-year-old, who recently made headlines with a semifinal appearance at Roland Garros 2023, capitalized on Kalinskaya’s 25 unforced errors to clinch the match in 80 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium. This marks a milestone for Haddad Maia, as she reaches the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career. She is also the first Brazilian woman to progress to the US Open third round since Tennis Hall of Famer Maria Bueno in 1976. Next, she faces former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in their maiden head-to-head encounter.
In other notable matches, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek dispatched 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 6-2, advancing to her fourth consecutive US Open Round of 16. Swiatek will now meet No. 16 seed Liudmila Samsonova on Monday. Despite a 3-0 head-to-head advantage over Samsonova, Swiatek acknowledged the challenge ahead, citing her opponent’s "fast and flat" playing style.
Elsewhere, the 34-year-old Caroline Wozniacki impressively defeated French qualifier Jessika Ponchet, 6-3, 6-2, becoming only the eighth player in the Open Era to reach the US Open Round of 16 at age 34 or older—a feat last achieved by Serena Williams in 2020.
Other fourth-round qualifiers include 6th seed Jessica Pegula, who overcame Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, 6-3, 6-3, Diana Shnaider who outplayed Sara Errani, 6-2, 6-2, 5th seed Jasmine Paolini who triumphed over Yulia Putintseva, 6-3, 6-4, and Karolína Muchova who bested Anastasia Potapova, 6-4, 6-2.
Stay tuned for more action-packed updates from the US Open.
