Stellar Atkinson Propels England to Glorious Series Win Against Sri Lanka in Thrilling 2nd Test
England Secures Series Against Sri Lanka with Dominant Win at Lord’s
LONDON, Sep 1: England clinched the Test series against Sri Lanka with a commanding 190-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s, driven by Gus Atkinson’s stellar five-wicket haul. Atkinson’s 5-62 in the second innings added to his first-innings century, placing him on the Lord’s honours board once again. England bowled out Sri Lanka for 292 on Day 4, sealing a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Building on their recent success, including a 3-0 series win over the West Indies in July, England dismissed Sri Lanka just after tea, overcoming half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, and captain Dhananjaya de Silva. Despite a mountain of runs from England, Sri Lanka made a valiant effort, chasing an improbable target of 483. However, two dropped catches by Joe Root and some benign conditions were unable to derail England’s momentum.
In front of a sparse fourth-day crowd, Atkinson grabbed the second new ball and efficiently cleaned up the tail, marking Sri Lanka’s first defeat at Lord’s in six visits since 2002. This win also underscores England’s dominance, marking their seventh consecutive Test victory over Sri Lanka since the drawn 2016 Lord’s Test.
Atkinson emerged as England’s new star, following his outstanding series against the West Indies, which included a 10-wicket haul at Lord’s. His brilliant all-around performance in this Test further solidified his burgeoning reputation.
England had previously won the first Test in Manchester and will look to complete a series sweep in the third and final match at The Oval, starting on Friday.
The English team’s performance exhibits a continuity of excellence, maintaining form and strategy through multiple series, which positions them strongly as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
