Life-Saving Hope: Assam’s Groundbreaking Health Screening for Children with Heart and Blood Disorders
Assam Launches Comprehensive Health Screening Program for Children with Complex Medical Conditions
Assam has embarked on a ten-day, state-wide health screening initiative aimed at children with complex heart and blood-related disorders. Launched on Sunday, the program targets conditions like congenital heart diseases, leukemia, thalassemia, and other rare blood disorders.
During a Facebook Live session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged parents and guardians to bring children aged 0-14 to nearby screening camps. Sarma emphasized the life-saving potential of early diagnosis and treatment.
The screenings are being conducted at government medical colleges and hospitals across the state, ensuring accessibility even in remote areas. Comprehensive diagnostic services will be provided to identify serious heart conditions and blood-related diseases, offering specialized care where necessary.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the government’s commitment to intervening medically. "We will conduct screenings, and if surgeries are necessary, they will be performed either in Assam or abroad," he stated, emphasizing that financial or logistical constraints should not bar children from receiving treatment.
Special focus is given to thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder. Sarma announced that the government would fund bone marrow transplants for thalassemia patients, covering costs between ₹9 to ₹14 lakh. "A bone marrow transplant can be life-saving, and we will ensure these transplants are available to those in need," he added.
The program also addresses congenital heart diseases, extending care to children up to 18 years old. Required surgeries will be conducted under various government schemes, either locally or at external facilities, depending on case complexity.
Implemented across various government institutions, the program aims to benefit the maximum number of children. The government plans to closely monitor the progress to ensure healthcare needs are met adequately.
This initiative is part of Assam’s broader strategy to enhance access to critical medical services for children. By focusing on early detection and intervention, the program aims to alleviate the health burden on families and improve outcomes for children across the state.
Chief Minister Sarma concluded his address by encouraging families with eligible children to participate, reaffirming the government’s dedication to providing necessary care and support.
