Heartfelt Tribute: Dibrugarh’s Cole Road Renamed Jayanta Dutta Path to Honor Fallen BJP Leader | Guwahati News
Dibrugarh: Cole Road, a well-known street in Dibrugarh town, will be renamed ‘Jayanta Dutta Path’ in honor of the late BJP leader Jayanta Dutta, who was killed by suspected Ulfa militants on May 1, 2001. The ceremony, set for Thursday, will be overseen by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Jayanta Dutta, a former BJP state general secretary and 2001 assembly election candidate from Dibrugarh, was attacked and killed along with the then Dibrugarh district BJP secretary and another party worker while entering his election office after campaigning on May 1, 2001. The assault also injured nine others. Following the brutal attack on Dutta, the suspected militants targeted an Asom Gana Parishad office in Dibrugarh, resulting in the deaths of an activist, a policeman, and another person.
On Sunday, Dibrugarh district officials, including Commissioner Bikram Kairi, Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy, Mayor Saikat Patra, and Dibrugarh district BJP president Ujjal Kashyap, visited Cole Road to review the preparations for the renaming event.
In related news, Champai Soren, former Jharkhand chief minister, is set to join the BJP on August 30. Currently a minister in the JMM-led government, Soren made this announcement after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Soren has expressed dissatisfaction with his treatment within the JMM, leading to his decision to switch parties. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed this move.
