Grateful Tibetans Laud US & Canada for Heartfelt Support on 64th National Parliament-in-Exile Anniversary | MorungExpress
Dharamsala, September 2 (IANS): The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) marked the 64th founding anniversary of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile by expressing gratitude to the US and Canada for their advocacy of Tibetan self-determination.
The Kashag, the executive branch of the CTA, highlighted US President Joe Biden’s endorsement of the “Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act” on July 12. This Act condemns China’s policies that suppress Tibetan religion, culture, language, history, way of life, and environment. The legislation underscores the unresolved status of the Tibet-China dispute and promotes a negotiated resolution through dialogue, aligning with the historical stance of Tibet.
Additionally, the Kashag applauded the unanimous resolution passed by the Canadian Parliament on June 10, which supports Tibet’s right to self-determination and condemned China’s cultural assimilation tactics against Tibetans. The Canadian resolution affirms that Tibetans should have the freedom to choose their economic, social, cultural, and religious policies without external interference.
In its statement, the Kashag emphasized the importance of preserving Tibetan national identity and culture despite Chinese oppression. It called on Tibetans in free countries to exert collective effort to urge China to halt its repressive policies. While celebrating Tibetan Democracy Day, the Kashag acknowledged the need for improvements in their democratic system, specifically in strengthening laws and regulations to ensure fairness and justice.
The message also reflected on the Dalai Lama’s "middle-way" approach, advocating for greater autonomy rather than full independence for Tibet. Despite the commitment to non-violence and dialogue, the CTA faulted Beijing for the stalled dialogue process since 2010, attributing the deadlock to China’s lack of political will.
The Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 after Chinese troops took control of Lhasa, stresses a non-violent solution for Tibet through mutual benefit and negotiation.
