US Athlete Outraged: Paralympic Committee Knowingly Put Him In Grave Danger By…
US Olympic and Paralympic Committee Faces Serious Allegations
The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has come under fire after being accused of knowingly endangering a Paralympic athlete, Parker Egbert. Egbert, a Paralympic swimmer, filed a lawsuit in 2022 alleging that he suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse by a teammate, including incidents that occurred during the Tokyo Games. A recent court filing from Egbert’s lawyers claims the USOPC placed him in a room with the accused teammate despite multiple previous complaints about their behavior.
In an interview with The New York Times, Egbert’s mother expressed her son’s mixed feelings. While he is happy to see his teammates achieve their dreams, he grieves the loss of his own career due to the enduring trauma. She further highlighted the shocking discovery during the lawsuit’s process of numerous and severe complaints against the accused, which had been filed by other athletes.
Among these complaints is a sexual misconduct allegation from another Paralympic swimmer, made one year before the Tokyo Games. Egbert, now 21, is seeking punitive damages against the USOPC.
Egbert, diagnosed with autism as an infant, competed in two para swimming events during the Tokyo 2020 Games under the S14 categorization. According to the Paralympic Games website, S14 athletes have intellectual impairments affecting pattern recognition, sequencing, memory, and reaction time, which generally impact their sports performance.
These revelations surfaced as the Paralympics commenced in Paris this week. The event opened with 4,400 athletes from 168 delegations parading down the Champs Elysees into the Place de la Concorde at sunset. Ticket sales for Paris 2024 have been impressive, with 2.1 million sold out of 2.5 million available, and an additional 300,000 set to be released, potentially surpassing the record of 2.7 million tickets sold at London 2012.
