The Pattabiram police under the Avadi City Police jurisdiction have registered a case against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator S. Seeman. The charges fall under the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in response to Mr. Seeman allegedly singing a defamatory song targeting former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. The incident reportedly involves a derogatory reference to a caste.
The Tamil Nadu State Commission for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes had recommended invoking the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after Mr. Seeman’s alleged defamatory act. As per the recommendations, using the name of a specific caste in a derogatory manner constitutes grounds for filing a case.
This controversy surfaced during a campaign leading up to the Vikravandi byelection. During this campaign, Mr. Seeman reportedly sang a song that included the caste name, allegedly with the intent to defame the former Chief Minister. A complaint was subsequently lodged with the State Commission for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, prompting the Commission to instruct the police to take action against Mr. Seeman.
The registration of the case by the Pattabiram police signals a serious stance taken against any form of caste-based defamation. The development could have significant political ramifications, reflecting the ongoing sensitivity surrounding caste-based issues in Tamil Nadu politics.
