Public Outrage Erupts: Assam Student Arrested for Shocking Offensive Post on Lord Shree Ram
A 20-year-old Muslim student from Assam’s Barpeta district has been arrested for a social media post that offended Hindu religious sentiments. The post featured a derogatory image of Lord Shree Ram, provoking multiple complaints from Hindu organizations and student groups.
Sanidul Haque, also known as Mridul Ahmed, was detained by Barpeta Police on Thursday night following his controversial Facebook post. The third-semester undergraduate student from the Assamese Department at Madhab Choudhury College shared a photograph depicting someone urinating on a picture of Lord Shree Ram. The post included objectionable comments, quickly generating widespread outrage.
Haque’s arrest came under the directive of Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, after the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lodged a formal complaint with the Superintendent of Police in the Barpeta district. The ABVP also informed DGP Singh about the offensive content, prompting swift police action. Additionally, other Hindu organizations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Rashtriya Bajrang Dal filed separate complaints with the Barpeta Road Police Station, describing the post as an attack on Hindu religious beliefs.
The arrest has triggered demands from certain students at Madhab Choudhury College for the expulsion of Mridul Ahmed. They have threatened to stage protests if the college administration does not take disciplinary action against him.
The incident underscores ongoing religious tensions in the region and highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious figures in India. It also places a spotlight on the legal and social repercussions of controversial social media activity.
