Mamata Banerjee’s Passionate Plea to PM: Gravely Concerned Over Underappreciated Seriousness
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for tougher central legislation on rape cases, following her initial request which she believes was inadequately addressed by the central government.
In her follow-up letter dated August 29, 2024, Banerjee reiterated the points from her previous communication on August 22. She had then urged for stringent central laws and severe punishment for heinous crimes such as rape and rape-murder, emphasizing the necessity for trial authorities to complete cases within a stipulated time frame.
Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response to her initial plea, noting the absence of a direct reply from the Prime Minister on “such a sensitive issue.” Instead, a response came from the Minister of Women and Child Development, which Banerjee criticized as inadequate. “I am of the thought that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to the society have not been adequately appreciated while sending out this generic reply,” she stated.
In her letter, Banerjee highlighted West Bengal’s efforts to tackle such crimes by establishing Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Courts. She stressed the importance of having permanent Judicial Officers in these courts and urged the central government to address this issue promptly.
This renewed plea from Banerjee comes in the wake of a high-profile rape and murder case in Kolkata, which has ignited public outrage and heightened scrutiny of the state government’s approach to dealing with such crimes.
By calling for more stringent central legislation, Banerjee aims to ensure swifter and harsher justice for rape victims, reflecting wider societal demands for stronger measures against such grievous offenses.
