A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) worker, Ganesan, aged 70, allegedly attempted suicide in front of the residence of the party’s Madurai (Urban) district secretary, G. Thalapathi, at Tirupparankundram on Thursday, August 29, 2024. The Managiri native reportedly suffered 90 percent burns and is currently receiving treatment at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
According to police sources, Ganesan, who previously served as the Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai president in Aavin under the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), switched allegiance to the DMK in 2016. This is not his first such attempt; Ganesan reportedly attempted suicide in August 2023, expressing dissent over the tenure of R.N. Ravi as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
On the day of the incident, Ganesan went to meet G. Thalapathi, who also serves as the Madurai North MLA. He expressed grievances about not receiving due recognition within the party. After stepping out of Thalapathi’s residence, Ganesan tried to end his life but was saved by bystanders.
